Apolo’s love for animals stretches beyond the confines of our natural world. In the realm of ancient mythology, there are many mystical, mixed creatures that play significant roles in legends and stories of old. One such creature is the “Griffin,” an animal that has the upper body of an eagle and the lower body of a lion. The Griffin is featured in many cultures, from the Middle East, to Asia and Greece, where griffins were said to have guarded the gods’ gold. Griffins symbolize power, and are associated with the god, Apollo, who happens to be the artist’s namesake. In his rendition of the Griffin, the viewer is left to decide whether the griffin is ready to defend or attack. Either way, the Griffin exudes the energy of strength and security.
This sculpture was wholly forged by the artist using copper, silver, brass, and bronze.
